Meta is shutting down the Messenger apps for Mac and Windows

I hate Messenger, but unfortunately a lot of people in my circle use it. The only way I remember to reply is when my Mac gives me a little red number in the dock when there are unread messages. I’m expecting grumpy friends complaining that I never reply anymore 😅😅 Maybe a 3rd-party web wrapper will pop up? Otherwise I’ll have to make my own with Safari’s “Add to Dock.”

TL;DR

Meta is killing Messenger apps for Mac and Windows, so desktop users will need to switch gears. The move pushes chats toward the web and mobile, signaling fewer standalone apps in Meta’s future.

Summary

Meta will discontinue its Messenger desktop apps for Mac and Windows, directing users to Messenger on the web instead. According to the article, the shutdown reflects Meta’s broader shift away from standalone desktop software. Existing users will need to access messages through a browser, while Messenger’s mobile apps remain available.
